The Presbyterians, Congregationalists, and Baptists of the 1630s and ‘40s alike suffered persecution under the Church of England. Presbyterians and Congregationalists suffered less under such persecution, uniting doctrinally under the Westminster Confession of Faith of 1646. The CalvinisticBaptists sought to publish a document of their own affirming their substantial unity with the Presbyterians and Congregationalists. The result was this confession, modeled after the Westminster Confession.
